RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between Cystatin C (CysC) levels and all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality in US metabolic syndrome (MetS) patients. METHODS: The 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) prospective cohort research included 1,980 MetS participants. To assess CysC levels and all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality, fitted curves, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, cox regression analysis, and ROC curves were performed. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 15.3 ± 5.4 years, a total of 819 deaths occurred. The fitted and Kaplan-Meier survival curves revealed that greater CysC levels were linked to higher all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality rates (P<0.05). After adjusting for variables, CysC level was associated with all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality at 1.63 (1.42-1.88), 1.53 (1.19-1.95), and 1.53 (1∼2.32), respectively (P<0.05). Later tertile models showed consistent results. High CysC tertile participants showed higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.87; 1.43-2.45), CVD mortality (HR 1.97, 1.15∼3.38), and cancer mortality (HR 1.72, 1.01∼2.91) compared to those in the lowest tertile (P<0.05). Subgroup studies by sex and other characteristics confirmed the findings. CysC demonstrated the higher predictive efficacy across mortality outcomes, followed by eGFR, outperforming Urea nitrogen, Creatinine, Uric acid, and CRP. CysC alone exhibited substantial predictive value for all-cause (AUC 0.773; P<0.05) and CVD mortality (AUC 0.726; P<0.05). Combining CysC with age enhanced the predictive value for all-cause mortality to 0.861 and CVD mortality to 0.771 (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: MetS patients with elevated CysC levels have a higher risk of all-cause, CVD, and cancer death. CysC may predict MetS all-cause and CVD mortality.

There is increasing evidence of abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants with low-grade intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). The purpose of the study was to explore whether brain microstructure and volume are associated with neuro-behavioral outcomes at 40 weeks corrected gestational age in preterm infants with low-grade IVH. MR imaging at term-equivalent age (TEA) was performed in 25 preterm infants with mild IVH (Papile grading I/II) and 40 control subjects without IVH. These subjects all had neonatal behavioral neurological assessment (NBNA) at 40 weeks' corrected age. Microstructure and volume evaluation of the brain were performed by using diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) and Synthetic MRI. Correlations among microstructure parameters, volume, and developmental outcomes were explored by using Spearman's correlation. In preterm infants with low-grade IVH, the volume of brain parenchymal fraction (BPF) was reduced. In addition, mean kurtosis (MK), fractional anisotropy (FA), radial kurtosis (RK), axial kurtosis (AK) in several major brain regions were reduced, while mean diffusivity (MD) was increased (P < 0.05). BPF, RK in the cerebellum, MK in the genu of the corpus callosum, and MK in the thalamus of preterm infants with low-grade IVH were associated with lower NBNA scores (r = 0.831, 0.836, 0.728, 0.772, P < 0.05). DKI and Synthetic MRI can quantitatively evaluate the microstructure alterations and brain volumes in preterm infants with low-grade IVH, which provides clinicians with a more comprehensive and accurate neurobehavioral assessment of preterm infants with low-grade IVH.

OBJECTIVE: Hip fracture and falls are significant health concerns. Handgrip strength (HGS) is closely associated with overall muscle strength and physical health. However, the longitudinal relationship between HGS and the risk of hip fractures and falls remains unclear, particularly regarding gender differences. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the association between HGS and the risk of hip fracture and falls in individuals aged 45 years and above, considering gender-specific differences over a 4-year period. METHODS: This study included 10,092 participants (4471 men and 5621 women) aged 45 years and above from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Incidents of hip fractures and falls were recorded during a 4-year follow-up, along with various demographic and clinical factors. Participants were categorized into five groups based on their HGS quintiles. Logistic regression models were employed to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the relationship between HGS and hip fracture/fall risk. RESULTS: During the 4-year follow-up period, 223 cases of hip fracture (2.2%) and 1831 cases of falls (18.1%) were documented. Notably, higher HGS demonstrated a strong inverse association with the risk of hip fracture in both males and females (p < 0.05). In comparison to the lowest HGS quintile, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for hip fracture were 0.46 (0.27-0.78) for the total population, 0.4 (0.19-0.81) for males and 0.48 (0.23-0.98) for females in the highest HGS quintile. Furthermore, a profound and statistically significant negative correlation between HGS and falls was detected (p < 0.05). The adjusted ORs for falls in the highest HGS quintile, compared to the lowest quintile, were 0.62 (0.51-0.76) in the overall population, 0.59 (0.44-0.78) in males, and 0.78 (0.62-0.99) in females. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the significant inverse association between HGS and the risk of hip fracture and falls in both males and females aged 45 years and above. Assessing handgrip strength may serve as a valuable tool for predicting fracture and fall risk.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) often arises as a cerebral complication directly related to preterm birth. The impaired autoregulation of cerebral blood flow is closely associated with IVH in preterm neonates. Three-dimensional pseudo-continuous arterial spin labelling (3D-pCASL) is a noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique used for evaluating cerebral perfusion. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare cerebral blood flow values among three distinct groups using 3D-pCASL: preterm neonates with and without IVH and preterm neonates at term-equivalent age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 101 preterm neonates who underwent conventional MRI and 3D-pCASL were included in this study. These neonates were categorised into three groups: 12 preterm neonates with IVH, 52 preterm neonates without IVH, and 37 healthy neonates at term-equivalent age. Cerebral blood flow measurements were obtained from six brain regions of interest (ROIs)-the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, basal ganglia, and thalamus-in the right and left hemispheres. RESULTS: The cerebral blood flow values measured in all ROIs of preterm neonates with IVH were significantly lower than those of neonates at term-equivalent age (all P<0.05). Additionally, the cerebral blood flow in the temporal lobe was lower in preterm neonates without IVH than in neonates at term-equivalent age (16.87±5.01 vs. 19.76±5.47 ml/100 g/min, P=0.012). Furthermore, a noteworthy positive correlation was observed between post-menstrual age and cerebral blood flow in the temporal lobe (P=0.037), basal ganglia (P=0.010), and thalamus (P=0.010). CONCLUSION: The quantitative cerebral blood flow values, as measured by 3D-pCASL, highlighted that preterm neonates with IVH had decreased cerebral perfusion. This finding underscores the potential of 3D-pCASL as a technique for evaluating the developmental aspects of the brain in preterm neonates.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: This study employed tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to investigate abnormalities in the white matter microstructure among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Additionally, an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model was developed to effectively classify individuals with ASD and typical developing children (TDC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Multi-shell diffusion weighted images were acquired from 62 children with ASD and 44 TDC. Using the Pydesigner procedure, diffusion tensor (DT), diffusion kurtosis (DK), and white matter tract integrity (WMTI) metrics were computed. Subsequently, TBSS analysis was applied to discern differences in these diffusion parameters between ASD and TDC groups. The XGBoost model was then trained using metrics showing significant differences, and Shapley Additive explanations (SHAP) values were computed to assess the feature importance in the model's predictions. RESULTS: TBSS analysis revealed a significant reduction in axonal diffusivity (AD) in the left posterior corona radiata and the right superior corona radiata. Among the DK indicators, mean kurtosis, axial kurtosis, and kurtosis fractional anisotropy were notably increased in children with ASD, with no significant difference in radial kurtosis. WMTI metrics such as axonal water fraction, axonal diffusivity of the extra-axonal space (EAS_AD), tortuosity of the extra-axonal space (EAS_TORT), and diffusivity of intra-axonal space (IAS_Da) were significantly increased, primarily in the corpus callosum and fornix. Notably, there was no significant difference in radial diffusivity of the extra-axial space (EAS_RD). The XGBoost model demonstrated excellent classification ability, and the SHAP analysis identified EAS_TORT as the feature with the highest importance in the model's predictions. CONCLUSION: This study utilized TBSS analyses with multi-shell diffusion data to examine white matter abnormalities in pediatric autism. Additionally, the developed XGBoost model showed outstanding performance in classifying ASD and TDC. The ranking of SHAP values based on the XGBoost model underscored the significance of features in influencing model predictions.

A retrospective analysis of birth data hospital-based obtained from 14 monitoring areas in the Huaihe River Basin from 2009 to 2019 was conducted. Trend in the total prevalence of birth defects (BDs) and subgroups were analyzed using the Joinpoint Regression model. The incidence of BDs increased gradually from 118.87 per 10,000 in 2009 to 241.18 per 10,000 in 2019 (AAPC = 5.91, P < 0.001). Congenital heart diseases were the most common subtype of BDs. The proportion of maternal age younger than 25 decreased but the age 25-40 years increased significantly (AAPC<20=-5.58; AAPC20-24=-6.38; AAPC25-29 = 5.15; AAPC30-35 = 7.07; AAPC35-40 = 8.27; All P < 0.05). Compared with the one-child policy period, the risk of BDs was greater for groups among maternal age younger than 40 years during the partial and universal two-child policy period (P < 0.001). The incidence of BDs and the proportion of women with advanced maternal age in Huaihe River Basin is increasing. There was an interaction between changes in birth policy and the mother's age on the risk of BDs.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to perform an assessment of brain microstructure in children with autism aged 2 to 5 years using relaxation times acquired by synthetic magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (ASD group) and 17 children with global developmental delay (GDD) (GDD group) were enrolled, and synthetic magnetic resonance imaging was performed to obtain T1 and T2 relaxation times. The differences in brain relaxation times between the 2 groups of children were compared, and the correlation between significantly changed T1/T2 and clinical neuropsychological scores in the ASD group was analyzed. RESULTS: Compared with the GDD group, shortened T1 relaxation times in the ASD group were distributed in the genu of corpus callosum (GCC) ( P = 0.003), splenium of corpus callosum ( P = 0.002), and right thalamus (TH) ( P = 0.014), whereas shortened T2 relaxation times in the ASD group were distributed in GCC ( P = 0.011), left parietal white matter ( P = 0.035), and bilateral TH (right, P = 0.014; left, P = 0.016). In the ASD group, the T2 of the left parietal white matter is positively correlated with gross motor (developmental quotient [DQ] 2) and personal-social behavior (DQ5), respectively ( r = 0.377, P = 0.028; r = 0.392, P = 0.022); the T2 of the GCC was positively correlated with DQ5 ( r = 0.404, P = 0.018); and the T2 of the left TH is positively correlated with DQ2 and DQ5, respectively ( r = 0.433, P = 0.009; r = 0.377, P = 0.028). All significantly changed relaxation values were not significantly correlated with Childhood Autism Rating Scale scores. CONCLUSIONS: The shortened relaxometry times in the brain of children with ASD may be associated with the increased myelin content and decreased water content in the brain of children with ASD in comparison with GDD, contributing the understanding of the pathophysiology of ASD. Therefore, the T1 and T2 relaxometry may be used as promising imaging markers for ASD diagnosis.

Background: Preterm infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are at high risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore the value of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) combined with serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) in evaluating alterations of white matter (WM) microstructure in preterm infants with NEC. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in which all participants were consecutively enrolled at The Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from June 2017 and October 2021. Data from 30 preterm infants with NEC [mean gestational age at birth 31.41±1.15 weeks; mean age at magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 37.53±3.08 weeks] and 40 healthy preterm infants with no NEC were recorded (mean gestational age at birth 32.27±2.09 weeks; mean age at MRI 37.15±3.23 weeks). WM was used to obtain the fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) values of the regions of interest (ROIs). Additionally, serum levels of CRP and PCT were determined. Spearman correlation analysis was performed between the WM-derived parameters, CRP level, and the PCT serum index. Results: Preterm infants with NEC had reduced FA values and elevated MD values in WM regions [posterior limbs of the internal capsule (PLIC), lentiform nucleus (LN), frontal white matter (FWM)] compared to the control group (P<0.05). Additionally, the FA of the PLIC was negatively correlated with serum CRP (r=-0.846; P<0.05) and PCT (r=-0.843; P<0.05). Meanwhile, the MD of PLIC was positively correlated with serum CRP (r=0.743; P<0.05) and PCT (r=0.743; P<0.05, respectively). The area under the curve (AUC) of FA and MD combined with CRP and PCT in the diagnosis of WM microstructure alterations with NEC was 0.968, representing a considerable improvement in predicted efficacy over single indicators, including FA [AUC: 0.938; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.840-0.950], MD (AUC: 0.807; 95% CI: 0.722-0.838), CRP (AUC: 0.867; 95% CI: 0.822-0.889), and PCT (AUC: 0.706; 95% CI: 0.701-0.758). Conclusions: WM can noninvasively and quantitatively assess the WM microstructure alterations in preterm infants with NEC. WM combined with serum CRP and PCT demonstrated superior performance in detecting and evaluating WM microstructure alterations in preterm infants with NEC.

Outdoor air pollution has been considered as a severe environmental health issue that almost affecting everyone in the world, and intensive actions were launched. However, little is known about the association between dynamic changes in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and body mass index (BMI) among old adults. To investigate the dynamic changes in ambient PM2.5 and body mass index among the elderly, we included a total of 7204 participants from 28 provinces of China during 2011-2015 in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Ambient fine particle matter (PM2.5) was estimated using a well-validated space-time extremely randomized trees model. Change in PM2.5 and BMI (ΔPM2.5 and ΔBMI) were calculated as the value at a follow-up visit minus value at baseline. Linear mixed-effects models were applied to quantify the associations, controlling for sociodemographic factors. We found that per 1 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure was associated with a 0.031-0.044 kg/m2 increase in BMI among the elderly. We observed an approximate linear concentration-response relationship of PM2.5 and BMI in each visit. Each 1 µg/m3 increase in ΔPM2.5 exposure was associated with an increase in ΔBMI (ß = 0.040, 95% CI 0.030, 0.049), while per 1 µg/m3 decrease in the ΔPM2.5 exposure level was associated with a decrease in ΔBMI (ß = -0.016, 95% CI -0.027, -0.004). Our findings suggest that dynamic changes in ambient PM2.5 was positively associated with changes in BMI among old Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of three feeding systems, i.e., indoor feeding (CON), indoor feeding with 4-h daily access to grazing artificial pasture (ITGP), and indoor feeding with 8-h daily access to grazing artificial pasture (IEGP), on the plasma antioxidant and immunological capacity, slaughter characteristics, meat quality and economic efficiency of Huang-huai lambs. METHODS: Thirty-three healthy Huang-huai rams with similar body weight (approximately 5 mo of age, 28.96±1.01 kg) were assigned equally to three experimental groups. When finished fattening, six lambs from each group were collect blood samples for plasma analyses and then slaughtered to determine slaughter characteristics and obtain biceps brachii muscle for further analysis of meat quality and fatty acid profile. RESULTS: Compared to CON group, animals submitted to ITGP and IEGP groups resulted in greater contents of serum glutathione peroxidase, immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, and IgM), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), n-6 PUFA, and PUFA/saturated fatty acid (FA) ratio and lower palmitic /oleic acid ratio (p<0.05). Moreover, animals in ITGP group exhibited a higher (p<0.05) loin eye area, content of meat crude protein (CP), and eicosetrienoic acid compared to CON group, while slaughter performance was superior (p<0.05) to that of the IEGP group. The economic efficiency of ITGP group was 70.12% higher than that of CON group, while the IEGP group exhibited a decrease of 92.54% in economic efficiency compared to the CON group. CONCLUSION: Restricted grazing time combined with indoor feeding was more effective in conferring superior body health, carcass traits and economic efficiency in Huang-huai lambs, as well as higher CP content and healthier FA composition in the resulting meat.

Objective: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy can lead to lifelong morbidity and premature death in full-term newborns. Here, we aimed to determine the efficacy of diffusion kurtosis (DK) [mean kurtosis (MK)] and diffusion tensor (DT) [fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusion (MD), axial diffusion (AD), and radial diffusion (RD)] parameters for the early diagnosis of early brain histopathological changes and the prediction of neurodegenerative events in a full-term neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBD) rat model. Methods: The HIBD model was generated in postnatal day 7 Sprague-Dawley rats to assess the changes in DK and DT parameters in 10 specific brain structural regions involving the gray matter, white matter, and limbic system during acute (12 h) and subacute (3 d and 5 d) phases after hypoxic ischemia (HI), which were validated against histology. Sensory and cognitive parameters were assessed by the open field, novel object recognition, elevated plus maze, and CatWalk tests. Results: Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed that specific brain structures showed similar trends to the lesion, and the temporal pattern of MK was substantially more varied than DT parameters, particularly in the deep gray matter. The change rate of MK in the acute phase (12 h) was significantly higher than that of DT parameters. We noted a delayed pseudo-normalization for MK. Additionally, MD, AD, and RD showed more pronounced differences between males and females after HI compared to MK, which was confirmed in behavioral tests. HI females exhibited anxiolytic hyperactivity-like baseline behavior, while the memory ability of HI males was affected in the novel object recognition test. CatWalk assessments revealed chronic deficits in limb gait parameters, particularly the left front paw and right hind paw, as well as poorer performance in HI males than HI females. Conclusions: Our results suggested that DK and DT parameters were complementary in the immature brain and provided great value in assessing early tissue microstructural changes and predicting long-term neurobehavioral deficits, highlighting their ability to detect both acute and long-term changes. Thus, the various diffusion coefficient parameters estimated by the DKI model are powerful tools for early HIBD diagnosis and prognosis assessment, thus providing an experimental and theoretical basis for clinical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Birth weight (BW) is an indicator of fetal growth and development. Previous studies showed inconsistent results on the association of ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure with BW, and the role of maternal thyroid function has not been clarified. METHODS: We recruited 1711 gravidas between 2017 and 2019 in Henan, China. All participants were followed up until delivery. Daily concentrations of PM, including PM2.5 and PM10, were evaluated by using the spatial-temporal model. Maternal thyroid hormone (TH) levels were quantified by electrochemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Linear regression models were employed to examine the association among PM, BW, and maternal TH. Mediating effects of maternal TH interrelated with PM exposure on BW were investigated by causal mediation analyses. RESULTS: A total of 1049 gravidas were identified. We found that per 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and PM10 were associated with a decreased BW of 9.941 g, and 7.758 g (PM2.5: 95 %CI: -18.184, -1.698; PM10: 95 %CI: -14.436, -1.080). An inverse correlation of maternal FT4 levels with BW was found, with the pooled ß of -319.983 g (95 %CI: -483.216, -156.750). We found a prominent positive correlation between gestational FT4 and PM exposure (PM2.5: ß = 0.004, 95 %CI: 0.001, 0.007; PM10: ß = 0.003, 95 %CI: 0.000, 0.006). Mediation analysis found that FT4 levels mediated the relationship between maternal PM exposure and BW, ranging from 5.55 % to 15.86 %. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal PM exposure may induce a reduction in newborn BW by affecting the maternal TH concentrations.

This study investigated the effects of three feeding systems, indoor feeding (CONT), indoor feeding with time-restricted grazing artificial pasture (4 h/day, G4H), and indoor feeding with an eight-hour daily grazing artificial pasture (G8H), on the growth performance, serum metabolites, ruminal fermentation, and fecal microbiota composition of lambs. Average daily gain showed a tendency (p = 0.081) to be higher for the G4H group compared with the CONT group. Moreover, feeding systems did not have a significant effect on most of the serum biochemical indicators in lambs. Concentrations of serum glutathione peroxidase and immunoglobulins (IgA, gG, and IgM) were significantly lower (p < 0.01) in the CONT group. Additionally, a tendency towards higher levels of volatile fatty acids, acetate, and butyrate was found in animals of the G4H group compared to the CONT group. Furthermore, fecal microbiota composition was altered in G4H and G8H groups, resulting in the increased relative abundance of Firmicutes and Ruminococcaceae UCG-005, as well as the decreased relative abundance of Ruminobacter compared with the CONT group. Overall, these results suggest that indoor feeding with restricted grazing time does not significantly affect fattening performance or rumen fermentation but enhances antioxidation and immune function activity and also alters fecal microbiota composition.

Anellovirus (AV) is a ubiquitous virus in the human population. Individuals can be infected with multiple AV genera and species to form a heterogeneous repertoire, termed the anellome. Using advanced methods, we examined the anellomes from 12 paired serum and liver samples, as well as 2701 subjects with different clinical diagnoses. Overall, anellomes are remarkably individualized, with significant among-group differences (Kruskal-Wallis test p = 6.6 × 10-162 for richness and p = 7.48 × 10-162 for Shannon entropy). High dissimilarity scores (beta diversity) were observed between patient groups, except for paired serum and liver samples. At the population level, the relative abundance of combinational AV genus Betatorquevirus (torque teno mini viruses, TTMV), and Gammatorquevirus (torque teno midi viruses, TTMDV) exhibited an exponential distribution with a low bound point at 32%. Defined by this value, the AV TTMV/TTMDV-expanded anellome was significantly enriched among patients with acute liver failure (31.7%) and liver transplantation (40.7%), compared with other patient groups (χ2 test: p = 4.1 × 10-8-3.2 × 10-3). Therefore, anellome heterogeneity may be predictive of clinical outcomes in certain diseases, such as liver disease. The consistency of anellome between paired serum and liver samples indicates that a liquid biopsy approach would be suitable for longitudinal studies to clarify the causality of the AV TTMV/TTMDV-expanded anellome in the outcomes of liver disease.

A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate recent epidemiological evidence on the association of air pollution with congenital anomalies (CAs). Of 11,014 records, 49 were finally included in this meta-analysis. Per 10 µg/m3 increase in air pollutant, PM10 exposure during the 1st month of pregnancy and at the first trimester (T1) was associated with increased overall CAs. Further, exposure to PM10 was associated with congenital heart disease (OR = 1.055, 95% CI: 1.035, 1.074) and patent ductus arteriosus (OR = 1.094, 95% CI: 1.020, 1.168) at T1, with chromosomal anomalies during the entire pregnancy and with nervous system anomalies when exposure occurred 3 months prior to pregnancy, during the 1st, 2nd months of pregnancy and at T1. Besides, a significant association with overall CAs was observed for a combined exposure of PM10 and SO2 during the 1st month of gestation (OR: 1.101, 95% CI: 1.023, 1.180). A combined exposure of PM10 and CO was also associated with tetralogy of Fallot during 3-8 weeks of gestation (OR: 1.016, 95% CI: 1.005, 1.027). No significant associations were observed between PM2.5, NO2, and O3 exposure and CAs.

The way that males and females react to environmental exposures and negative impacts on their neurological systems is often different. Although previous research has examined the cognitively impairing effects of solitary metal exposures, the relationship between metal mixtures and cognitive function, particularly when considering an individual's sex, remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate the sex differences in the association between multiple metal combinations and cognitive function in older Americans. This research employed the 2011-2014 NHANES survey of elderly Americans. The association between five mixed metals and four cognitive tests (the animal fluency test (AFT), the digit symbol substitution test (DSST), the instant recall test (IRT), and the delayed recall test (DRT)) were investigated with generalized linear regression model (GLM), Bayesian kernel machine regression model (BKMR), weighted quantile sum regression model (WQS), and quantile g-computation regression model (Qgcomp). A total of 1833 people, including 883 males and 950 females, enrolled in this cross-sectional study. We discovered that blood lead and blood cadmium were negatively associated with cognitive performance, while blood selenium demonstrated a positive association with cognitive function in older people. The negative relationship of heavy metal combinations on cognitive function might be somewhat reduced or even reversed via selenium. The IRT, AFT, and DSST are three of the four cognitive tests where men had more dramatic positive or negative results. There was a sex-specific connection between blood metal ratios and cognitive function among older Americans, as evidenced by the more significant relationship between mixed metals and cognitive performance in men (either positively or negatively). These results emphasize the impacts of ambient heavy metal exposure on cognitive function by employing sex-specific methods.

The available evidence on the effects of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and pregnancy outcomes (birth outcomes and pregnancy complications) has increased substantially. The purpose of this umbrella review is to refine the evidence of the association between birth outcome (birth defects) and PM2.5; and summarize the credibility of existing research on the association between pregnancy complications and PM2.5. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases for relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses up to March 16, 2022 in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Two independent investigators conducted data extraction. AMSTAR 2 and GRADE assessment criteria were used to evaluate the methodological and evidence quality. We performed subgroup analyses by trimesters of pregnancy. The review protocol for this study has been registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022325550). This umbrella review identified a total of 41 systematic reviews, including 28 articles evaluating the influence of PM2.5 on birth outcomes and 13 on pregnancy complications. Positive associations between perinatal PM2.5 exposure and adverse birth outcomes were found, including low birth weight, preterm birth, stillbirth, small for gestational age, and birth defects. Pregnant women exposed to PM2.5 had a significantly higher risk of developing hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia. The findings of subgroup analysis demonstrated that the effects of ambient PM2.5 exposure on pregnancy outcomes varied by trimesters. The findings of this extensive umbrella review provide convincing proof that exposure to ambient PM2.5 raises the risks of unfavorable birth outcomes and pregnancy complications. Some associations show considerable disparity between trimesters. These findings have implications for strengthen perinatal health care on air pollution and improving intergenerational equity.

Sheep and goats can efficiently convert low quality forage into high-quality meat which contains specific nutrients and quality traits. Carcass traits and quality attributes of sheep and goat meat depend upon several factors and one of most effective strategies amongst these is feeding regimens. In this review, the major aspects of feeding regimens affecting growth rate, carcass traits and quality attributes of sheep and goat meat are thoroughly discussed, with a particular focus on physical-chemical composition, flavor profile, and fatty acid (FA) profile. Grazing lambs and kids receiving concentrate or under stall-feeding systems had greater average daily gain and carcass yield compared with animals reared on pasture only. However, growth rate was higher in lambs/kids grazing on pastures of improved quality. Moreover, the meat of grazing lambs receiving concentrate had more intense flavor, intramuscular fat (IMF) content, and unhealthy FA composition, but comparable color, tenderness, juiciness, and protein content compared to that of lambs grazed on grass only. In contrast, meat of concentrate-fed lambs had more intense color, greater tenderness and juiciness, IMF and protein contents, and lower flavor linked to meat. Additionally, the meat of kids grazed on concentrate supplementation had higher color coordinates, tenderness, IMF content and unhealthy FA composition, whereas juiciness and flavor protein content were similar. In contrast, kids with concentrate supplementation had superior color coordinates, juiciness, IMF content and unhealthy FA composition, but lower tenderness and flavor intensity compared to pasture-grazed kids. Thus, indoor-finished or supplemented grazing sheep/goats had higher growth rate and carcass quality, higher IMF content and unhealthy FA composition compared to animals grazed on grass only. Finally, supplementation with concentrate increased flavor intensity in lamb meat, and improved color and tenderness in kid meat, whereas indoor-fed sheep/goats had improved color and juiciness as well as reduced flavor compared to pasture-grazed animals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggested that long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with increased risk of stroke. However, limited studies evaluated the stroke burden attributable to ambient PM2.5 globally, especially comprising across different regions, countries, and social-economic levels. We thus conducted this study to estimate the spatial and temporal trends of ambient PM2.5-related stroke burden by sex, age, and subtypes from 1990 to 2019 at global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: Information on the ambient PM2.5-related stroke burden from 1990 to 2019 was obtained from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019. The burdens of stroke attributable to ambient PM2.5 (i.e., age-standardized mortality rate [ASMR] and age-standardized disability-adjusted life-year rate [ASDR]) were estimated by sex, age, and subtypes from 1990 to 2019 at global, regional, and national levels. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was used to evaluate the changing trends of ASDR and ASMR attributable to ambient PM2.5 from 1990 to 2019. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to examine the correlation between sociodemographic index (SDI) and EAPC of ASMR and ASDR at the national level. RESULTS: In 2019, the global ambient PM2.5-related stroke mortality and disability-adjusted life years were 1.14 million and 28.74 million, respectively, with the corresponding ASDR and ASMR of 348.1 and 14.3 per 100,000 population, respectively. The ASDR and ASMR increased with age and were highest among male patients, in the middle SDI regions, and for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). From 1990 to 2019, the absolute death number of stroke attributable to ambient PM2.5 and the corresponding ASMR and ASDR were both in an increasing trend. The corresponding EAPCs in ASMR and ASDR were 0.09 (95% CI -0.05 to 0.24) and 0.31 (95% CI 0.18-0.44), respectively. The significant increases of ASMR and ASDR were observed in the low, low-middle, and middle SDI regions, and for ICH. However, a decreasing trend was observed in high and middle-high SDI regions, and for subarachnoid hemorrhage. DISCUSSION: The global burden of stroke attributable to ambient PM2.5 showed an increasing trend over the past 30 years, especially in male patients, low-income countries, and for ICH. Continued efforts on reducing the level of ambient PM2.5 are necessary to reduce the burden of stroke.
